Immortal Saga is a free strategy video game that lets you embark on a journey to attain justice. Developed by Starmongoose, this 2D pixelated indie game is a strategy RPG that was heavily inspired by the Fire Emblem series and features turn-based combat mechanics, as well as a story-rich narrative. 

Similar to JRPG titles like Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, Immortal Saga follows an epic tale of a protagonist going on an adventure and eventually teaming up with numerous characters—each with their own goals in mind. This version is the beta phase and only contains Part 1 of the whole game. 

Your legacy starts here 

In Immortal Saga, you play as Mandy, a young lordling and the daughter of a marquis in the kingdom of Hydernity. In the beginning, she sets off to defend her people from peril by creating her very own army. However, her father is soon unfairly imprisoned so she embarks on a new journey to seek justice. The game is designed to have you visiting all five continents mentioned in the story.

In terms of gameplay, this indie title is fairly straightforward but also incorporates advanced turn-based combat mechanics. You can review these using the tutorial. There are two game modes available: Classic Mode and Phoenix Mode. Classic Mode applies permadeath to your run, so any character who dies in a battle can no longer rejoin the next one. Meanwhile, Phoenix Mode turns this off—although you’ll still get a Game Over if Mandy dies.

The game is heavy on the story and dialogue, with over 40 playable characters you can recruit as allies. However, take note that the game is still under development; only the first half is available. The game works well enough despite its incomplete status. The only real issues are some grammatical errors and the tutorial being much wordier in nature and not really letting players test things out themselves.

There’s room for improvement

All in all, Immortal Saga is an interesting JRPG-styled game if you’re a fan of long story campaigns and dozens of playable characters to recruit. While there are some tweaks required to this beta version—such as glaring typos and the one-sided nature of the tutorial—the first half of the game that’s been offered performs well enough that both the story and gameplay really shine.
