Hi Dictionary is a free education mobile app that enables you to easily translate foreign language text. Developed by Fun and Hi Tool, this handy app is basically a portable translator. It offers various translation features that aren’t usually used by other apps, such as a floating magnifying glass and a clipboard tool, so you don’t need to constantly switch between apps to figure out a text. Additionally, you can contribute to translations by correcting them.

Highly intuitive

Hi Dictionary—or Hi Dictionary-Free Language Translation Dictionary—is similar to other translator apps, like Google Translate, as it can process detected text into the language of your choice. While its range of offered languages isn’t as comprehensive as some of the more popular apps, it has enough that you can still use it as an alternative to the others. There are over 100 languages to choose from, so you’re bound to find the one you need. 

This app also has the usual translation features, including offline mode, a dictionary, language detection, and camera AI translation. However, its best-known tools would have to be its floating translator ball and its clipboard tool. The floating translator ball is a little hovering function that can stay on top of other apps. You only need to drag it to the text you want to translate, and it will do so without opening up another box or the app itself. 

When not in use, it minimizes to a tab so it won’t bother you, and you can disable it, too. Take note that this tool will require your device’s permission to work. The clipboard tool, on the other hand, is what you can use if you’re manually highlighting words. You only need to tap the three dots once the highlight options show and tap the “Hi Dictionary” among the choices. This will show a small pop-up at the bottom of your screen containing the translation. 

Not just a translator

Aside from translations, Hi Dictionary also offers cool little features such as a Word of the Day for learning unfamiliar words in English, suggested phrases for the word you searched, and an option to easily assess the in-app translator on the notification bar. This app can also translate chat bubbles on your preferred social media app, and you can either set your friend’s language on the menu or let the language detector automatically process it. 

This mobile utility is pretty user-friendly with its interface design. However, it needs some permissions first before you can use it. For one, you need to allow its accessibility, which you can toggle on your device’s settings. The app also needs permission to appear on top of other active apps for the translator ball. More so, you cannot move the translator ball to a new location by simply dragging it. Finally, the most important thing you need to consider about this app is the fact that it needs constant updating via its setting. 

Worth the permissions

All in all, Hi Dictionary is a robust tool to use despite only being a mobile app. It can easily compete with some of the more popular apps as long as it’s up-to-date and has its permissions enabled. While it will ask permission for some special settings, they’re worth it and make the app more intuitive for any type of user. This is a highly-recommended app to try out.
