A turn-based strategy game that innovates traditional chess
Gambonanza is a turn-based, strategy-oriented chess game developed by Blukulélé and published by Sidekick Publishing and Stray Fawn Publishing for desktop gaming. In this roguelike title, you play chess matches with a twist against opponents on tiny boards but with much higher stakes.
Illustrated in 2D graphics with an 1980s retro aesthetic, Gambonanza delivers an imaginative and intellectually demanding experience with its unorthodox chess mechanics and roguelike deckbuilding elements. Unlike the traditional gameplay of the said board game, this title utilizes various board sizes and allows you to break the rules of the traditional game.
Break the rules
In Gambonanza, the chess pieces can be moved according to their traditional mechanics. However, unlike the standard version of the game, it also follows the mechanics of checkers by requiring you to eliminate every single piece of the opponent’s, as opposed to just capturing the king. Move your pieces and form synergies to claim victory as the board crumbles.
Each match becomes more exciting, as there are over 150 Gambits, which are properties you can utilize to alter the rules of the game, to unlock. Additionally, you can keep extra pieces off the board to deploy during crucial moments. It ensures that every single match run is a surprise, and it is up to you how to use the Gambits to your advantage.
In addition to the main game, several engaging mini-games are available, including pachinko, slot machines, and Gachapon. Each of these offers opportunities to earn game-changing upgrades for your chess matches. However, the game has a few frustrating drawbacks, including an overly long tutorial, unskippable dialogue boxes, and slow, clunky performance, making the overall gaming experience less enjoyable than it should be.
Refreshing take on traditional chess
Overall, Gambonanza offers a bold and refreshing twist on classic chess, blending strategy, roguelike elements, and retro-inspired charm into a uniquely challenging experience. Developed by Blukulélé and published by Sidekick Publishing and Stray Fawn Publishing, it rewards creativity and adaptability despite minor pacing issues. For players seeking a strategic game that dares to bend the rules, Gambonanza delivers an imaginative and memorable adventure.
