This is a board game for two-players. It is played on a square board with eight squares on each side and a total of 64 smaller squares. Eight pawns, two knights, two bishops, two rooks, one queen, and one king make up each player's initial set of sixteen pieces. Each player tries to checkmate the other player's king in order to win the game. No move can prevent a checkmate, which is a threat (or "check") to the enemy king. The game is over as a result.
