A steampunk-inspired action MMORPG

Elyon was a free-to-play MMORPG from Bluehole Studio and Kakao Games that combined fantasy and steampunk themes. Known for its large-scale Realm vs Realm battles, airships, and mechs, the game stood out for its fast-paced non-targeting combat system. Instead of tab-targeting, players relied on precision and timing.

The game emphasized customization and flexibility, offering deep skill trees and class builds. With aerial combat and multiple PvP modes, Elyon gave fans of competitive MMORPGs a variety of ways to test their abilities. While praised for its combat and customization, it was also noted for having a weaker narrative and limited long-term appeal.

How did Elyon play?

At its heart, Elyon focused on action combat that felt closer to an action RPG than a traditional MMO. Players could chain skills into fluid combos, dodge enemy attacks in real time, and engage in large-scale clashes between the Vulpin and Ontari factions. Aerial combat provided an extra layer of excitement, letting players take battles into the skies with airships, mounts, and advanced gear.

Character progression was highly flexible. Instead of being locked into rigid classes, players adjusted abilities through skill trees and rune systems to fit different roles in combat. This system gave players freedom to experiment, though it also created a steeper learning curve. For many, this customization was one of Elyon’s strongest features, keeping combat fresh even in long play sessions.

The game ran on Unreal Engine 3, offering solid visuals with a distinct steampunk flair. Airships, mechanical constructs, and sprawling landscapes gave Elyon a unique aesthetic, even if its world design sometimes felt generic. Performance was generally stable, though optimization issues on lower-end PCs were a common complaint. Without strong storytelling or standout worldbuilding, the game often relied on combat and customization to hold attention.

Ambitious but imperfect.

Elyon delivered a compelling mix of dynamic combat, aerial battles, and deep customization, making it appealing to MMO fans who enjoy skill-based gameplay. However, its weaker narrative, uneven performance, and modest adoption limited its staying power. Though service has since ended, it remains a notable entry in the MMORPG space, remembered for its ambitious approach to combat and large-scale PvP.
