DOOM: The Dark Ages marks a bold and atmospheric shift in id Software’s iconic franchise, transporting the Doom Slayer into a gothic, medieval-inspired world. As a prequel to the 2016 reboot, Doom, it reimagines the series’ crazy combat with heavier melee mechanics, strategic parrying, and a grittier tone. 

DOOM: The Dark Ages increases the arsenal, including medieval-inspired weaponry like the Impaler and the Shredder, alongside classic firearms. The combat remains intense and satisfying, with each weapon offering unique advantages against the demonic hordes for more fun, bringing out the DOOM spirit for newcomers and veterans alike. 

Shields, parries, and brutality 

In DOOM: The Dark Ages, the most notable addition is the introduction of a shield that serves both defensive and offensive purposes. Players can parry enemy attacks, with clear visual cues indicating parryable moments, allowing for powerful counterstrikes. This mechanic adds a layer of tactical depth to the traditional run-and-gun gameplay. The game integrates parrying into its fast-paced first-person shooter gameplay by equipping the Doom Slayer with a large shield. 

Set in the techno-medieval realm of Argent D’Nur, the game’s environments are richly detailed, featuring sprawling castles, ancient cathedrals, and desolate battlefields. The atmospheric design enhances the immersive experience, drawing players into a world where ancient magic and advanced technology coexist. This action game attempts a more narrative-driven approach, exploring the origins of Doom Slayer and his role within the Night Sentinels. However, the story is not appealing. 

The game performs smoothly on current-gen consoles and high-end PCs, delivering consistent frame rates and quick load times. However, players with mid-range systems may encounter performance issues, particularly due to high VRAM requirements. The game’s soundtrack, while not composed by Mick Gordon, still delivers a heavy metal score that complements the on-screen action. However, some fans may find it lacks the distinctive punch of previous entries. 

Realistic lighting and benchmark tools arrive

DOOM: The Dark Ages received a significant update for its PC version, introducing enhanced lighting and new performance tools. The update adds Path Tracing with Ray Reconstruction, which improves how light interacts with surfaces. This creates more realistic shadows, reflections, and material details, offering a noticeable boost in visual quality. This feature is compatible with NVIDIA graphics cards running driver version 576.75 or higher.

Additionally, the update includes a Benchmark Mode that shows real-time graphs displaying important metrics like FPS, total frame time, and the workload on the GPU and CPU. This helps players understand how well their hardware can handle the game and whether they need to adjust settings. It also fixes an issue when Alt + Tabbing during cutscenes with FSR Frame Generation enabled. Now, players can safely switch applications during cutscenes without freezing.

A gritty leap into medieval mayhem 

DOOM: The Dark Ages reinvents the franchise with brutal medieval flair, introducing shield-based parries and gritty, weighty combat. While it delivers satisfying action and atmospheric design, its story and soundtrack may not strike the same chord as previous entries. For fans seeking a darker, more tactical evolution of DOOM’s chaos, this prequel offers a fresh and blood-soaked battleground worth exploring.
