Play as a drone operator from Ukraine
Published by Lesser Evil and developed by Rockodile, Death From Above is a paid shooter with a unique premise: drone warfare. Here, you are a Ukrainian drone operator in the middle of the Russia-Ukraine war, and with your trusty drone, you can complete objectives and rain hell upon your adversaries.
As you explore the battlefield, you’ll come across plenty of references to real-world current events, which add to the worldbuilding but also incite a bit of comic relief. With the team partnering with NGO Aerorozvidka and Ukrainian firm Gis Arta, Death From Above promises an authentic drone-operating experience.
Complete objectives and find Easter eggs
Death From Above opens with an injured Ukrainian soldier getting dragged by an unknown individual. Now in a cellar in an occupied village, he finds out that his savior is an old woman who made poisonous mushroom pies to end the lives of the Russian occupants. Determined and armed with a drone and explosives, the unnamed soldier is more than ready to unleash his retribution upon his country’s adversaries.
Whether it’s stopping Russian convoys or clearing mines, this title boasts a plethora of unique mission objects to engage the player’s senses and minimize gameplay monotony. Operating your drone, though, leaves you open to attacks, so flying it from a safe area is advised. Due to the absence of fuel and battery life bars, there’s no limit on how long your drone can stay airborne.
However, it’s best to stay covert as enemies will shoot your drone. Although you’ll be flying your drone most of the time, switching to your character is necessary at certain points in the game. There are a couple of drawbacks you need to take note of, though. For example, the lack of fuel and battery limitations and dynamic weather are a turn-off for players who value realism in military titles.
Engage in drone warfare
Overall, Death From Above delivers a refreshing experience of flying a drone during the Russia-Ukraine war. Switching between flying your drone and controlling the protagonist heightens the gameplay, whereas the covert exploration of the battlefield is key to accomplishing mission objectives and finding Easter eggs. However, the team behind this game should work on enhancing realism through the implementation of a weather system or fuel limitations.
Pros
- Simulates the experience of flying a drone
- Plenty of mission objectives
- Easter eggs
Cons
- No weather system
- Can appear as not realistic enough for some
- Lack of battery or fuel limitations
