Darkenstein 3D is a premium action game for PC from indie developer Rowye. It's a retro first-person shooter inspired by classic FPS games of the 90s. Players will go on a shooting rampage as they find themselves lost behind enemy territory and must blast their way through to survive and escape. 

Heavily inspired by classic Wolfenstein and Doom games, Darkenstein 3D combines the rhythm-like flow of the former with the brutal action of the latter. A demo version is available for newcomers to check out for a preview of what they can expect from the gameplay. 

Best of both worlds 

The Wolfenstein and Doom game franchises are some of the most popular and influential first-person shooters in the genre, offering fast-paced gameplay with brutal and satisfying action. Even their original releases still receive plenty of love and playtime today. Here, then, comes Darkenstein 3D, a retro shooter that takes the best parts from both series and combines them into a Nazi-slaying bulletfest. 

In Darkenstein 3D, you play as Hobo Guy, an American drifter lost behind enemy territory in 1940s Germany, searching for your dog Gunther. Armed with rage and seeking vengeance, find your loyal pup, escape alive, and bring down as many Nazis in the process. Blast through 13 handcrafted levels using various weapons, along with a rat companion that will lunge at enemies and carry explosives like mines and grenades. 

Gameplay is pretty straightforward and skill-based, meaning you will need to land your shots while dodging enemy fire, or risk suffering permadeath and having to start all over again. On another note, there is no specific release date for the game yet, so you will sadly have to wait a while longer before you'll be able to play the full version. 

An impressive tribute 

Overall, if you're a fan of Wolfenstein and Doom games, Darkenstein 3D is pretty much a must-play and gets an easy recommendation for being an impressive tribute to those classic shooters.
