Call of Duty: Warzone is a free-to-play Call of Duty game with two main game modes: Battle Royale and Plunder. It has other cool game modes, as well, and its preloaded sequel adds more fun features for both the single-player and multiplayer experiences. 

Call of Duty: Warzone comes from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, while Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 was released as part of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (2022). With a free-to-play business model, players can try out the action game’s in-game purchases and Battle Passes to help make their playing much more enjoyable. 

The difference between Warzone and Warzone 2.0 

Call of Duty: Warzone and Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 are separate titles with shared battle royale roots but different executions. Warzone introduced Verdansk and large-scale survival with up to 150 players. Warzone 2.0 builds on that with a new map, Al Mazrah, improved visuals, refined gunplay, and updated movement and looting systems. It runs on a newer engine and stands as its own game, offering a more polished and modern experience. However, it has microotransactions. 

The map is massive. Multiplayer Mode lets you team up with a squad of people and you can choose to get together with friends or randoms. Single-player Mode lets you take on the competitors alone, and the battle royale solo match is more difficult considering you doesn’t have additional support from your team members. Warzone 2.0 now has a new map after the equally massive Al Mazrah, which saw its Gulag downsized into a 1v1 arena. 

A battlefield that thrives on changes 

Call of Duty: Warzone continues to evolve as a live-service battle royale, with recent updates pushing new modes, map changes, and gameplay tweaks. One of the biggest additions is Black Ops Royale, a mode that strips back systems like loadouts and the Gulag in favor of a more classic, loot-focused experience. Movement updates like improved traversal, swimming, and positioning mechanics continue to refine matches. Although, it can be overwhelming for new or returning players. 

Recent updates also introduced new maps and areas like Avalon and updated zones across existing maps, along with fresh limited-time modes such as Prop Hunt Royale and Hot Pursuit. Weapon balancing remains a constant focus, with adjustments to recoil, damage ranges, and mobility to keep the meta shifting between seasons. On top of that, seasonal content keeps expanding through battle passes, new operators, and weekly challenges, giving players ongoing progression and rewards. 

A battle royale giant that stays alive through constant reinvention 

Call of Duty: Warzone remains one of the biggest battle royale shooters because it pairs strong gunplay with large-scale matches that constantly shift through updates, new maps, and rotating modes. The newer version refines that formula with cleaner systems and a more modern feel, while seasonal content keeps players coming back. Still, its live-service structure, monetization, and constant meta changes can make the experience feel demanding over time.
