Blossom: The Seed of Life is a premium simulation PC game by developer Pebbledust Games. It’s a sci-fi open-world survival crafting adventure set on the planet Mars. Set in the distant future, players will embark on a quest to terraform and bring the planet back to life by utilizing the available resources to build structures and cultivate life once more. 

Comparable to The Planet Crafter or Astroneer, Blossom: The Seed of Life combines base-building and sandbox exploration mechanics in its gameplay. There’s even an automation element included as players strive to build a self-sustaining ecosystem supporting diverse life forms. 

Reviving Mars 

In the game, you play as the titular Blossom, a cute yet capable robot built to survive in harsh, inhospitable conditions where humans cannot. You’ve been given the complex and challenging mission of terraforming Mars and transforming it into a life-sustaining planet, where all kinds of flora, fauna, and microorganisms can thrive. However, the task poses various obstacles you need to overcome. 

First, gather resources to refine and craft into essential building materials. What makes Blossom: The Seed of Life unique is its modular rovers that can be retrofitted for mining, storage, transportation, and other purposes. It essentially provides you with a mobile base of operations you can take anywhere. You also need to be mindful of your power reserves, so charge up regularly to prolong your uptime for performing tasks. 

Utilize drones to automate essential core tasks and unlock blueprints and technology upgrades to support more advanced systems and functions, before moving on to the next plot of land to terraform. Unfortunately, the gameplay experience can often feel fragmented as a result of its untethered and free-form nature. Also, there have been random performance dips even on fairly capable hardware that need to be looked into. 

Intriguing but jarring 

The experience in Blossom: The Seed of Life is highlighted by the fact that you can essentially build and put up bases anywhere, making for interesting and varied gameplay that feels fresh and new every time. However, it also contributes to a feeling of fracture progression, which will put off some players. Hopefully, this will be addressed and improved upon in the future.
