BARK is a first-person RPG that allows players to take on the role of an abused dog. The main goal is to escape from this household and eventually find freedom in the outside world. Expect long and immersive gameplay, as well as a host of unique character abilities.

The survival-based principles that comprise the core of BARK can be compared to those found within other platforms, such as Stranded Deep (in terms of resource farming). However, the fact that players will take on the perspective of a small animal provides a unique twist on traditional RPGs.

An intriguing storyline

BARK tells the story of a Jack Russell terrier that has been abused by its owners. It finally decides to escape, and yet, this is easier said than done. Not only must it avoid its human captors, but other dangers, such as vicious animals, await.

Impressively engineered graphics

As BARK takes place from the perspective of a dog, several unique features are present. For instance, the world appears in muted colors (similar to the eyesight of canines). It is also possible to sense the heat (or auras) of other creatures, allowing the player to see through objects such as walls.

Points-based gameplay

Although evasion and escape are important, players are also awarded points for specific actions, such as barking at cats and finding treats. These can then be used to upgrade various skills. There is somewhat of a difficult learning curve, as no tutorial is available.

Evoking emotion as opposed to merely escaping

The realistic and even dark nature of BARK is comparable to other indie games, such as Nobody - The Turnaround. This has been done purposefully, as the developer states that the main intention was to highlight the plight of abused animals. Players are, therefore, likely to experience a wide range of emotions.
