Aliens: Dark Descent is a paid sci-fi action strategy game set in the Alien universe. Unlike its previous survival horror entries, it emphasizes real-time strategy, and  team cooperation. It’s also available via Xbox GamePass and PlayStation Plus for the PS4, PS5, so as the Xbox One, and Xbox Series XS platforms.

Aliens: Dark Descent features impressive visuals showcasing expansive environments and features squad-based strategy akin to classics like Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel and XCOM 2. Unlike previous Alien games, this takes a top-down orientation compared to Alien: Isolation’s first-person perspective. To play the game, you must pay a one-time purchase.

Every decision made counts

Aliens: Dark Descent is not directly connected to other Alien games, but it retains familiar elements. You will lead colonial marines against the Xenomorphs on Moon Lethe, facing not only the iconic aliens but also rogue operatives and other alien species with unique designs. Customize your squad with various classes and weapons, but be warned: permadeath is in effect, meaning you have to start all over with a new character.

The year is 2198, and the moon of Lethe hums with activity. The warship USS Otago undergoes final preparations for its maiden voyage, while the civilian shuttle Bentonville delivers essential supplies to the bustling Pioneer Station. Unbeknownst to the unsuspecting colonists, an agent has infiltrated the station, unleashing a horrifying cargo. Deadly Xenomorphs, creatures of unimaginable terror, emerge from their concealed containment, turning the once-vibrant station into a blood-soaked killing ground.

The game features claustrophobic, non-linear level design with interconnected pathways and hidden areas, mirroring the classic Alien films. The soundtrack blends atmospheric synth with industrial sounds, creating a tense and unsettling atmosphere. The horror stems from the constant threat of unseen Xenomorphs, and the unpredictable nature of enemy encounters, fostering a sense of dread and paranoia in you. But compared to Alien: Isolation, you aren’t alone since you have your squad.
 

Dying isn’t an option

The game includes base-building mechanics, allowing you to hire units and research new technologies. Explore the environment, navigate hazards, and uncover secret paths. While a squad-based game, the lack of multiplayer mode is a missed opportunity. It immerses players with its atmospheric setting and fog of war mechanics. Careful planning is crucial as every move could lead to an ambush. Manage resources wisely as you guide your squad towards escape.

As with every game, there’s also some drawbacks here like the need for higher system requirements, both in hardware and software; in order to play it smoothly. Permadeath and sudden slowdown sequences may be exciting, intense or annoying to some players. Being an Alien game, expect some over the top violence and graphic imagery throughout the gameplay. Thankfully, the game’s accessibility options and adjustable difficulty settings cater to all players.

A refreshing addition to the franchise

Aliens: Dark Descent is a welcome addition to the Alien franchise. By shifting the focus to aggressive combat, it offers a unique experience when it comes to stealth and strategy. The game’s challenging gameplay features, particularly permadeath, enhance the experience to some players. While it requires higher system requirements, has some graphic imagery, and co-op mode is absent, this sci-fi action title is highly recommended for fans of the franchise.
