At the beginning of Against the Storm, you are presented with a tutorial that introduces them to the basic mechanics of resource gathering, construction, and management. You must gather resources such as wood, stone, and food and use them to build structures such as housing, production buildings, and defensive structures. As the village grows, you must recruit and train workers to gather resources and perform various tasks.

These tasks include farming, hunting, and mining. You must also manage the village's economy, including taxes, trade, and production, to ensure that the village has enough resources to expand and thrive. In this game, you must also explore the surrounding wilderness to discover new resources and opportunities, while also fending off attacks from dangerous creatures and protecting the village from the storm's wrath.

Along the way, you will encounter various characters and factions with their own goals and motivations, adding depth and intrigue to the game's story. As you progress through the game, you’ll face increasingly difficult challenges and obstacles. However, the game's many mechanics and systems can be overwhelming for new players, and the tutorial may not provide enough guidance for some.

Logistics and balance update

Like any other game, Against the Storm is continuously made better through fresh updates from the developers. The newest one is the logistics and balance update, wherein new stuff was added to the game and some existing elements were tweaked to provide a smoother gaming experience. Now, the previously added haulers are assigned to work at the warehouses, carrying additional perks as well.

Furthermore, there are four new Cornerstones and two new trader or order perks, with most of them being focused on haulers. Additionally, there are three new Forest Mysteries and two added Citadel upgrades. As for the tweaks, the Cornerstones were modified so they are more balanced now. Plus, rarities and drop rates were also played around with. Cost rebalances were done too, so now the earlier buildings are cheaper to build, thus allowing newer players to get their footing quickly.

Most challenging endeavor of the game

Embark on the Queen's Hand Trial, a hardcore permadeath mode tailored for the most adept Viceroys in Against the Storm. Your mission is to reforge the Adamantine Seal within a single cycle without losing any settlements. A single misstep, whether in failure or abandonment of a settlement, forces a restart. You will start at level 18 with minimal Citadel Upgrades and basic unlocks, like Trade Routes and Rainpunk, and strategically progress through the trial.

Your choices matter, as upgrades are no longer laid out in a traditional tree but are presented pseudo-randomly. With 25 picks, each offering three upgrades, you navigate a dynamic landscape of possibilities. The Smoldering City allows gradual purchases, but comprehensive acquisition is impossible. The Queen's Hand Trial brings an intense, rogue-like experience where success grants the coveted “Queen's Hand Trial” Deed and an exclusive reward — the Queen's Hand Pauldron, the final piece of the Viceroy's uniform in your home.
