A hard game with a sad story

In Afraid of Monsters DC Mod, David Leatherhoff goes to the local hospital to rehabilitate himself from his substance abuse problems. As a victim of a mysterious drug, he’s working to go on the straight and narrow. Unfortunately, a wrong episode with painkillers sends him into a nightmare. After waking up he finds himself alone and surrounded by monsters. One reason to try this game is its multiple twist endings.

Even by Half-Life modding standards, this director’s cut is notoriously difficult. Aside from the usual HL first-person shooter experience, it places heavy emphasis on resource management and at times, stealth. Its monsters are tanky, hard-hitting abominations that further stress the need to make sure that every attack counts. In terms of utility, you have a flashlight with limited batteries for navigation, where you risk moving alone in the darkness.

Also, although the weapons and enemies are reskinned for this game, they are implemented well. For example, the basic Vortigaunt becomes an Abomination, which spits poison and deals lasting damage. A small problem that plagues this game is a clipping bug that happens intermittently, risking the player getting stuck on floors and walls. There is no known fix for this aside from reloading saves or using the noclip cheat.

Fun, scary, and memorable

If you’re looking for a unique, original experience within your Half-Life app, Afraid of Monsters DC Mod should be on your list. Expect an original story that is grounded that ends in multiple, equally surprising endings. However, as a video game, get ready to be frustrated by the difficulty, the bugs, or both. Its reskinned monsters pose a real threat, which makes it worse if you get stuck. Recommended.
