Comprehensive Messaging Application for Windows
Classic IRC control with modern upkeep
ZoiteChat is a free, open-source IRC client that continues HexChat’s familiar desktop experience. It connects to multiple networks at once, supports Python 3, Perl, and Lua scripts, and offers extensive interface customization through themes, colors, menus, and addons. TLS connections, SASL authentication, and optional FiSHLiM encryption add useful security controls. Its flexible design suits regular IRC users and open-source communities, although the traditional layout can feel crowded beside simpler messaging apps.
ZoiteChat organizes servers, channels, and private conversations through a familiar tabbed interface. Users can add custom networks, save preferred nicknames, connect automatically, and join selected channels at startup. Multi-network support makes it easier to follow several communities without opening separate clients. Themes, notification settings, spell checking, and editable menus provide strong personalization, though the number of available controls can take time to explore.
The client includes local conversation logs, configurable alerts, DCC file transfers, and secure storage for supported network credentials. Existing HexChat users can also bring across many compatible scripts and settings, reducing the friction of switching clients. Its scripting support enables detailed automation and custom commands, but these advanced options require more technical knowledge than the basic process of selecting a network, choosing a nickname, and joining a channel.
ZoiteChat supports TLS connections and SASL authentication for networks that offer them. FiSHLiM provides optional shared-key encryption for configured channels and private conversations, although every participant needs the same key. Proxy settings can also work with a separate Tor installation when the chosen network accepts those connections. These tools improve connection control, but they do not make every IRC conversation private or anonymous by default.
Long-time HexChat users can navigate ZoiteChat quickly because its channel tree, user lists, command input, and preferences follow a traditional IRC layout. Newcomers face a steeper learning curve around networks, ports, nicknames, authentication services, and server commands. Basic chatting remains manageable through the graphical interface, while scripting, proxy routing, certificates, and custom plugins demand greater familiarity with IRC and desktop configuration.
ZoiteChat is a strong fit for users who want a maintained HexChat alternative with multi-network management, scripting, addons, and detailed customization. Its familiar design supports established IRC routines without forcing experienced users into a simplified interface. However, that same depth creates a dense first impression, and advanced security or automation features require manual setup. It serves IRC communities well, but users seeking effortless account-based messaging can find the experience dated.
