Yo-kai Watch: PuniPuni is a free puzzle mobile video game wherein you go monster-collecting throughout the city. Developed by Level-5 Inc., this cute 2D mobile RPG is one of the spin-off games of the Yo-kai Watch game franchise and features cute little monster blobs you can obtain and use as characters in battles.

Just like LINE: Disney Tsum Tsum, Yo-kai Watch: PuniPuni is all about matching several similar characters in one swipe of your finger in order to collect them and power up your team. Take note, however, that this is the Japanese version—which is the only active server left.

Rely on the visuals

Yo-kai Watch is a Japanese mixed-media franchise by Level-5 that includes role-playing video games and a toy line and is about befriending cute Yo-kai monsters. The developer is known for their other series—Inazuma Eleven, Professor Layton, and Ni no Kuni—which had also been given their own cartoon shows. Yo-kai Watch was first known to global audiences this way so its video games eventually found success—especially its mobile games.

Yo-kai Watch: Wibble Wobble is one of these, which was a spin-off to the main games. However, this English version didn’t last long and got shut down in 2018. The Japanese version, Yo-kai Watch: PuniPuni, is active and up-to-date, though, and can actually be played by English users by either using Google Play Store, downloading from a third-party source, or using QooApp. 

Take note, however, that the game language will be in Japanese and it can’t be changed. Still, the controls are easy enough to figure out after a while and you get much more updated content compared to the English version. The gameplay simply involves chaining similar-looking Yo-kai Wib Wobs to power them up for attacks against your enemy. Plus, you can collect more of them via the gacha system.

Overall, Yo-kai Watch: PuniPuni is a great enough game to start with if you’re interested in experiencing the series via mobile gaming. It has classic token-matching gameplay and lets you collect cool and cute characters from the Yo-kai Watch series. However, you ought to expect that the language can’t be changed or patched out since this is the Japanese version connected to the Japanese server.
