Yo-kai Watch 4, developed by LEVEL-5, pushes the series toward a more action-focused monster-collecting RPG format with direct real-time battles and a story spanning the present, past, future, and Yo-kai World. Players can control both human Watchers and Yo-kai during combat, recruit new allies through the Kon-katsu system, and develop six playable Watchers through individual skill trees. The broader 3D presentation also gives the series a noticeably larger sense of scale.

Four timelines turn one journey into a crossover

Exploration moves between four connected worlds tied to different parts of the Yo-kai Watch franchise, bringing characters from several eras into the same story. Players travel through towns and supernatural areas, follow narrative quests, battle hostile Yo-kai, and collect soul materials used for recruitment. Kon-katsu keeps Yo-kai collecting central to progression, while the crossover structure gives longtime fans plenty of familiar faces and settings to recognize.

Watchers finally step into the fight

Combat changes more dramatically than almost any other part of the series. Six playable Watchers can fight directly alongside Yo-kai, each with distinctive abilities and skill trees, while players can switch between human and Yo-kai characters during encounters. This real-time combat system replaces the more automated style of earlier entries with movement, attacks, dodging, resource management, and character switching, giving battles a much more hands-on rhythm.

Bigger worlds get a supernatural guide dog

Yo-kai Watch 4 gives towns, characters, and battles a substantial 3D visual upgrade, with expanded environments and more detailed models than earlier numbered entries. Naviwoof, a spectral dog companion, helps guide players toward objectives when exploring these larger spaces. The stronger presentation makes the different eras feel more distinct, although performance on Switch can become uneven in busier areas, particularly when environments and effects place greater demands on the hardware.

Building a team takes more than collecting faces

Progression revolves around developing Watcher skills, strengthening Yo-kai, adjusting party composition, and recruiting new allies through Kon-katsu. The four-world structure also supports a substantial amount of exploration and crossover storytelling. Additional content belongs to the separate Yo-kai Watch 4++ expansion, which adds new areas, more Yo-kai, and cooperative Pura Pura Busters missions rather than forming part of the original base-game feature set.

A bold evolution with one stubborn language barrier

Yo-kai Watch 4 works best for players who want a more active take on the series without losing its focus on collecting supernatural companions. Direct battles and the four interconnected worlds give the sequel a stronger sense of scale and immediacy than earlier entries. However, there is no official English localization, creating a substantial barrier for players who cannot comfortably navigate the available languages. Uneven performance also keeps the technical side from matching the ambition of its visual overhaul.
