Fantasy-themed crafting and adventure experience
Wytchwood is a premium adventure experience from Alientrap. This combines role-playing, exploration, and crafting elements as you follow an unconventional story. As the old witch in the woods, you will be tasked with exploring the countryside to collect materials and souls for your spells and potions. Discover the story of different people, deliver punishment or offer rewards.
At first glance, Wytchwood has that visual treatment similar to Death’s Door, but with a gameplay that’s as expansive as Little Witch in the Woods or to some extent, Stardew Valley. Its tame premise, however, could make it boring for some players.
Be a witch on an errand
Wytchwood has a straightforward premise: you are a witch going to town to gather materials. However, the more you play the game, the more you discover the story that each person offers. Some of them are secretly evil, and it’s up to you to embrace the tools of witchcraft at your disposal. This adds a form of progression: unlock more curses and punish more people who deserve them.
Game elements also work together smoothly to create an immersive experience. The set designs vary, from the dull-colored swamp where you live to more colorful areas such as forests and towns. Combined with the character animations you start feeling like you are in charge of a children’s fairy tale book. Lastly, the game’s sounds round everything together nicely, always fitting for the different scenarios and points in the story.
Despite its complexity, the game is designed for a relaxing experience. It mostly focuses on story interactions and fetch quests. As such, it lacks straightforward combat mechanics and its story conflicts are still resolved through indirect means. This kind of approach, however, is divisive at best. It is well-executed and well-thought-out but will come across as boring to the wrong audience.
A fun, enjoyable experience
Beyond simple crafting, Wytchwood manages to make itself a lot more enjoyable by creating a uniform and immersive experience. It nails that fairy tale vibes with its graphics and animations but caters to a more mature, even philosophical, narrative as you play along. The fetch quests and crafting mechanics are on point and for a wide range of players, this will be a definite must-try.
