Gundam (also called Gundam 00, and sometimes referred to as 00Gundam, or simply 00) is a series of military mecha-based action television series produced by the Japanese television network, JAPAN TV. The first series was broadcast from April to December 1979, and the last series was broadcast from December to March 1988. The series was originally part of the Sunrise TV programming lineup, and later part of the FBC programming lineup. The series was distributed in the United States by TBS, and later by MBS. The first series was released in DVD format in North America, and later released in digital format.

The series is based on a mecha of the same name, and uses an advanced robotic technology to provide a mobile fighting platform for the human pilot. The mecha is designed for use in the military, and is equipped with a high degree of machine automation. In order to increase the mobility of the machine, the mecha has a self-driving capability, and can be operated by a human pilot in command of the machine. The mecha is capable of fighting in air, on land, and underwater, and is armed with a wide variety of weapons.

In addition to the mecha, the series also introduces the concept of the "Gundam" pilots, the human beings who use the mecha. The pilots are designed to be compatible with the mecha, and have the ability to control and operate the machine. The pilots are divided into four categories, based on their personality and abilities.
