Efficient V2Ray Client for Windows Users

VPN by Google One: a simple privacy layer for Windows browsing

VPN by Google One, developed by Google LLC, provided a lightweight privacy layer for Windows users who wanted encrypted connections and IP masking. The app encrypted internet traffic and hid users' IP addresses to reduce online tracking and protect sessions on public Wi‑Fi, activating with a single click from the Google One desktop client. Key aspects included integration with Google One account management, high-speed routing over Google's network, and a deliberately minimalist interface for everyday desktop browsing.
The VPN targeted simple privacy needs on desktop, using an encrypted internet tunnel and IP address masking to limit tracking and secure public connections. It automatically assigned a server in the user's region rather than offering region switching, making it useful for routine browsing and Wi‑Fi protection but unsuitable for users who need geo-unblocking or manual exit-node choice.
Activation occurred via the Google One desktop app with a single click, and account management tied into Google One settings, which lowered setup effort for members. The interface intentionally exposed few configuration options, a design decision that led advanced users to criticise the app for limited controls, while everyday users benefited from a minimal workflow and fast connections routed across Google's infrastructure.
The Windows client supported 64-bit desktop installs and the service had equivalents on macOS and mobile platforms, so desktop users could adopt the same protection across devices. Because the VPN installed through the Google One desktop client rather than as a standalone enterprise appliance, IT teams need to consider imaging and management implications when deciding whether to include the app in managed desktop images.
Google officially discontinued the VPN by Google One service on June 20, 2024, which removes it from consideration for new deployments. Technical teams should remove any remaining installations and choose an actively maintained VPN with enterprise-friendly management for managed desktops. As a practical step, validate endpoint management compatibility and session-control features in replacement products before rolling them out across corporate machines.
