FINAL FANTASY EXPLORERS FORCE
Immersive Multiplayer RPG for Mobile Phones
Premium fantasy RPG from Square Enix
VoC: The Isle Dragon Roars is a premium card game from Square Enix. It incorporates standard deckbuilding features to deliver an engaging JRPG experience. This game lets you follow a fantasy kingdom that has forgotten about a menace that once drove them close to extinction. As it returns, you must gather strong and brave warriors to respond to the call.
By borrowing a lot of elements from classic tabletop games, plus an impressive cast, VoC: The Isle Dragon Roars is a promising way to spend hours, whether solo or with friends in the multiplayer mode.
Basically, VoC: The Isle Dragon Roars shares gameplay similarities with Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions, particularly the wide range of character classes and turn-based matches. However, instead of controlling small avatars on boards, you get to place cards on large grids that represent the lay of the land. Additionally, combat in this game is decided by dice rolls, adding unpredictability to the experience.
Although it doesn’t necessarily introduce any original tabletop RPG elements, the way these elements play out as storytelling mechanics is what makes this game a must-try. It includes Yoko Taro, an art director known for his association with the NieR: Automata franchise. This VoC entry also enlists Keiichi Okabe, who worked on Tekken and Drakengard, to provide the musical score.
Despite being a card game, it has some quality animations and visual effects. This, however, makes it resource-intensive. The developers have released a set of system requirements, including 3GB of storage and an operating system of AndroidOS 7.0 or later. Compatibility issues could lead to the game not running smoothly or outright crashing. Also, it has a shorter story campaign compared to other games in the genre.
If you’re after medieval fantasy elements, a good selection of characters, and a story backed by top-tier direction and musical score, VoC: The Isle Dragon Roars is one title you can’t miss. Although it doesn’t reinvent any game genre, it has enough materials to offer for deckbuilding and RPG fans alike. Despite its short playthrough, it’s still worth a shot.
