Enjoy the different trails available
ViewRanger: Trail Maps for Hiking, Biking, Skiing—or simply ViewRanger—is a free health and fitness mobile app that lets you check out where to go for your outdoor adventures. Developed by Augmentra, this lifestyle app features various maps for different activities, such as hiking and biking. It can be used offline and even syncs with certain smartwatches. However, this app is now integrated into the Outdooractive app so don’t expect many updates.
Is the ViewRanger app free?
Similar to other navigation apps, ViewRanger is a travel app you can freely use wherever you may be. Rather than long distances, however, this app focuses more on outdoor activities that require you to look for paths and trails to tread on. With the help of OpenStreetMap contributors, you have access to highly-detailed maps—as well as other information like headings, bearings, latitude, longitude, and altitude.
To use the app, either sign up and log in or simply enter with a guest account. You can use your account from Google, Facebook, and Apple or create one with your email address. What’s great about this app is that you don’t require GPS location tracking or even an internet connection at all to open it. There are five tabs you can access on the menu once you’re logged in: Exploration, Map, Profile, Search, and Settings.
The Exploration displays all available routes—and you can filter these by the type of activity, the distance, the range of difficulty, and the user rating. Map showcases your current area and offers the Skyline feature, which shows points of interest. The Profile tab tracks your information and activities, while Search lets you find locations. Meanwhile, you can check out all of the general and specific features of the app in Settings—such as BuddyBeacon and Challenges.
No more good updates
Overall, ViewRanger is a great app for active users who either want to explore new locations or don’t want to get lost as they do their outdoor activities. While it’s no longer going to be actively updated due to the integration with Outdooractive, it’s still usable and makes for a nice quick reference depending on what you plan to do. If you want a free and easy-to-use fitness app, then this is a good enough alternative.
