THE MERCHANT OF VENICE is a comedy by William Shakespeare. It is a story of money, power, and friendship, set in the city of Venice in Italy.

The story begins in Venice, where a successful merchant, Girolamo, is celebrating his birthday with a huge party. At the party, Girolamo is offering a large amount of money to anyone who can help him get some money, and the play begins with a scene showing Girolamo and his friends and family accepting the challenge.

Girolamo has two friends who are also eager to make money: Lorenzo, a rich man, and Pietro, a poor man. Lorenzo has a daughter who is sick, and Girolamo is hoping to cure her. He asks his friends to help him, and they agree to do so. They all leave the party and start working.
