Guide Clea to avenge her parents in this story-rich JRPG

The Dragon and the Sword is a Japanese role-playing game developed by Studio Dobby and published by Shiravune and Co-FUN Games for PC. This casual title follows the purposeful journey of Clea and her guildmates for vengeance, following the murder of her parents by a mythical dragon.

Illustrated in 2D graphics, The Dragon and the Sword offers an action-packed and story-driven experience with its turn-based combat mechanic, party-oriented system, and rich storytelling. It also explores themes of drama, magic, and fantasy, blending emotional storytelling with mystical adventures and imaginative worldbuilding.

Avenge Clea’s parents

At its core, The Dragon and the Sword is a visual novel, with over two hours of playthrough, that delves into the aftermath of the murder of Clea’s parents. She joins the Adventurer’s Guild Ftera, accompanied by three other members, each motivated by their own reasons, to embark on a journey for vengeance against the mythical dragon that killed her parents.

Clea, the female protagonist, is voiced by Haruru Akiyama. Meanwhile, the three other characters—Mage Relm, who seeks a dragon corpse to use as material for a grimoire; Thief Nora, who aims to bring back the dragon’s eye to prove her worth to a bandit group; and Priest Sophia, who follows the church’s teachings and performs acts of heroism—are voiced by Shiki Asagi, Haru Koyama, and Shiho Bubaigawara, respectively.

Moreover, this thrilling visual novel is full of hand-drawn event CGs, beautifully illustrating its dramatic moments and key story scenes. However, it features several drawbacks that prevent it from reaching its full potential, including binary decision points and incomprehensible translations. Most notably, the issues that make it nearly unplayable are critical bugs: one causes the main story to become stuck on the Flying Ship, while another renders the side quest inaccessible

Engaging visual novel

Overall, The Dragon and the Sword presents an engaging mix of visual novel storytelling and turn-based role-playing elements, supported by appealing hand-drawn artwork and a memorable cast of characters. Its themes of revenge, fantasy, and adventure create a compelling experience. However, major technical issues, awkward translations, and limited choices hold it back. With proper fixes and polish, it could be a strong and more enjoyable title.
