Relive these classic Commodore Amiga games
The Black Dawn Collection is a free adventure video game collection that allows you to enjoy a classic dungeon crawler series from the Commodore Amiga platform. Developed by timeslip1974, this package contains nearly all ‘90s Black Dawn games in ADF (Amiga Disk File) format, which were optimized to run on emulators.
In The Black Dawn Collection, you’ll find the most obscure of BD games that never got any remakes or ports—unlike the beloved The Last Amazon Trilogy. However, take note that to even play these games, you’ll need the right emulator like WinUAE and FS-UAE or just port them to cartridges.
The Commodore Amiga is a family of personal computers introduced by Commodore in 1985—which differs from its competitors through the inclusion of custom hardware to accelerate graphics and sound. It also has a custom chipset that handles audio, video, and direct memory access independently of the CPU. As such, it has a performance edge over its rivals when it comes to playing video games at the time.
This is all the more true with the number of games created for it. One of these happens to be Black Dawn, which ended up becoming successful and spawning over 9 installments for the Commodore Amiga alone. However, like most games of that era, this series hardly saw the light again in modern gaming consoles. With The Black Dawn Collection, however, you can relive those golden days.
This extensive package of games is perfect for fans of the series, as it includes almost the entire collection. Thus, you can easily play these classic dungeon crawler games in their original crisp retro graphics using an Amiga emulator. Some of the files are archived so just unpack them to install properly. This package could still use some text file instructions for non-tech-savvy players, though.
All in all, The Black Dawn Collection is the Commodore Amiga game series to try out if you’re feeling nostalgic or just want to see the games of that era. While launching some of the games may be confusing due to the lack of a digital manual, most of them are easy enough to be deployed in an emulator. This is also a highly recommended collection for dungeon crawler fans.
