Here, the crew of a space shuttle has become horrifying monsters. Guided only by the ship’s AI, you begin your fight for survival.

This first-person survival game is separate from Half-Life 2. You are inherently defenseless against the monsters in the spacecraft and are left to stealth and survival, should you aim to finish the game.

Additionally, it has a pretty solid backstory. You have to progress in order to uncover what actually happened in the ship and who’s actually at fault. Audio recordings and readable logs are scattered throughout the game, offering clues. This immersive experience is further highlighted by its use of original voice acting and soundtrack. Using the HL2 engine, the developer has made a separate, standalone game.

It features customized environment designs that add uniqueness to the game, focusing on source modding instead of simply applying new textures to existing game designs. The only drawback in this mod, however, is that it has a few negligible animation bugs and glitches along the way. Certain sections of the game do not display properly, especially when interacting with them. Other than that, it’s a great and complete custom experience.

A definite must have

Even if you’re not a fan of Half-Life 2, but appreciates a good sci-fi story, then The Apocalypse Mod is a perfect fit. Building on the original game’s engine, it manages to be an independent game with its own story, setting, and characters. It even encourages you to explore the map, aside from the survival skills required, in order to understand the entire narrative. Aside from a few minor bugs, this mod is playable and utterly enjoyable.
