Immersive underwater exploration sim
Thalassa: Edge of the Abyss is a premium adventure experience from Sarepta Studio, published by Team 17. This walking simulator offers a profound story about life and loss, set in the context of an underwater exploration. You are tasked with finding your former crewmates and friends as they’ve been lost at sea. With your antique dive suit, you get to explore an underwater galleon from the past.
Its impressive set design, realistic graphics, and equally relaxing and suspenseful gameplay make Thalassa: Edge of the Abyss a worthwhile treat. Its limited playthrough length and replayability value make it a one-and-done experience.
A psychological drama from the past
Thalassa: Edge of the Abyss is a first-person psychological drama that puts you in the boots of Cam, a deep-sea diver. The game is set in 1905, which is reflected in the game’s aesthetics. Your team is supposed to raise a Spanish galleon from the depths but with the expedition going awry. Being the only survivor, you find out what happened to Thalassa and her crew.
In terms of gameplay, it mostly feels like a walking sim. Assisted by your diving support Bailey, you go deep into the water. You explore the sunken Thalassa, or what remains of it, as well as the Spanish galleon. Look into clues for history, or try to piece together the crew’s final moments. This part expands on Cam’s relationship with them, rounding up the experience with an emotional gut punch.
However, once you’re done exploring and you’ve found out what happened to Thalassa, there’s really not much to do. It doesn’t take too much time to explore both vessels and see the complete picture. While the storytelling is poignant and effective, the game itself lacks replayability. In the middle of all this, you get treated to an impressive underwater world that is both breathtaking and frightening.
An effective, memorable underwater story
Thalassa: Edge of the Abyss is a gripping first-person psychological drama set in 1905. Playing as Cam, a deep-sea diver, you explore a sunken ship to uncover its tragic story. The game offers poignant storytelling and breathtaking underwater visuals, although its gameplay resembles a walking sim and lacks replayability. Despite its short length, the emotional depth and atmospheric setting make for a memorable experience.
