TextNow: Call Text Unlimited, from TextNow Inc., provides a free dedicated phone number for unlimited calling and texting across the United States and Canada. The app supports Wi-Fi calling and, when paired with a TextNow SIM or eSIM, offers nationwide cellular coverage plus essential data for navigation and rideshare apps. Key functions include voicemail-to-text, group messaging, photo and video messaging, and cross-device synchronization. It targets budget-conscious users, students, seniors, and anyone who needs a no-contract secondary line.

What is TextNow used for?

The app supplies a secondary phone identity and basic telephony services without a traditional carrier plan. It gives a free local phone number you can keep or port, plus unlimited nationwide talk and text across the US and Canada. Core capabilities include:

• Wi‑Fi calling and messaging
• optional nationwide cellular access via a TextNow SIM or eSIM
• voicemail-to-text and caller ID

How private are your conversations on TextNow?

Privacy is shaped by the app's ad-funded model and account synchronization. The service operates with advertising partners to cover service costs, so advertising is part of the experience. Accounts synchronize a single phone number across phone, tablet, and desktop, so messages and calls appear on every signed-in device. The app also requires regular use to keep a free number active without opting for the number-lock option.

What is a good alternative to TextNow?

TextNow fits where a dedicated phone line matters more than an internet-only messenger. Compared with purely internet messaging services, this app supplies a dialable number plus optional cellular access for on-the-go calling. It also differs from traditional carriers by offering no-contract activation and instant eSIM setup. Users who prioritize a second reachable number without a monthly carrier plan find the app practical for travel, temporary lines, or secondary business use.

How do you manage notifications across devices?

Cross-device sync means messages arrive on multiple devices simultaneously, so notification control becomes important. Because your TextNow account and number sync across phone, tablet, and desktop, alerts can appear everywhere you are signed in. The app's optional SIM activation adds Free Essential Data for maps and rideshare apps, reducing reliance on Wi‑Fi when mobile. To reduce interruptions, adjust notification settings on each device or sign out on devices you do not actively use.

TextNow is a practical choice for users needing a low-commitment second line

TextNow is a practical option for budget-conscious individuals who need a reachable secondary phone number and plain voice and text access across devices. Consider whether an ad-supported experience and the trade-offs of an account-synced number align with your priorities. If you accept those trade-offs, the app suits students, seniors, and anyone needing a no-contract alternative to a standard carrier line.
