There are many things that distract us from consuming content. There are the endless ads that get in the way and can completely change the page and the design of the application. And then there are the links. Links within the text of the page, in Facebook chat, in the likes. All the images, videos and GIFs that you see on Facebook and other social networks, but which make up only a small percentage of the actual content. Images are so central to Facebook that they’ve become an integral part of the site’s design and functionality.

But what happens when they are removed?

Textbook is a web browser extension that removes all images from Facebook. So whether it’s a linked article preview photo, a friend’s profile selfie, or a “love” reaction icon, every image is hidden from view. This new way of looking at Facebook is only possible if images are removed. The content of the posts and the overall design of the page are left untouched.
