Terminal emulator for Android
Termux is a free utility tool for mobile devices by indie developer Fredrik Fornwall. This app allows users to emulate a command terminal inside a Linux environment straight from the Android operating system. With it, they can do a variety of things, from automating tasks to communicating between applications, and more.
Like other command tools, such as Shell Terminal Emulator or Aris, Termux can be installed and used without root access. It also provides users with more control over various aspects of the Android mobile operating system that would otherwise be hidden and overlooked by most.
Android is essentially just a mobile Linux distribution with a graphical user interface instead of a command terminal to make it more intuitive. This also means that some features and functions have either been hidden or streamlined for convenience, though. If you want to recover and take advantage of the advanced options the open-source OS has baked in, Termux is a tool that can help.
This app is basically a terminal emulator that you can run within Android itself without any special requirements like root access to additional resources. It also looks as expected, with a plain black background and text-based interface. Choose between bash or zsh shells as you like, and manage files with nano or vim. You can even access remote servers via the SSH protocol within the app itself.
Other features include using the python console as a pocket calculator and playing text-based games like frotz. You can even do some coding in C with the Clang compiler and GDB debugger. Note that it doesn't work with Android 12, though. Also, this tool is meant for advanced users familiar with the terminal interface and its various commands to get the most out of it.
All in all, Termux is a boon for power users who like to tweak and unlock other functions and options that Android has to offer. It's lightweight, doesn't require rooting, and can be used in a variety of ways. Beginners will encounter a steep learning curve, but if that's not a concern for you, then give this one a try. Recommended.
