The fifth installment of the popular Sudden Strike game series
Sudden Strike 5 is an action-packed strategy game set in WWII. Developed by Kite Games and published by Kalypso Media for desktop gaming, this is the fifth installment in the mainline entry of the Sudden Strike series, a popular game series known for its large-scale battles and tactical gameplay.
Like the previous titles of the game series, Sudden Strike 5 delivers the same isometric, real-time strategy experience that long-time fans love and even newcomers can appreciate. What differentiates it from the rest of the series is that it features larger scales, more massive units, an expanded campaign, and more.
Largest Sudden Strike series battle scale
In Sudden Strike 5, there are more than 300 playable units, including over 190 vehicles and 110 infantry units, paired with a multitude of tactical options that you can utilize across the single 25-mission campaign. This is the largest scale to date in the game series, allowing you to get ready for massive tactical warfare on historical battlefields in North Africa and Europe.
Pick from a selection of units, each with unique traits and excels in different playstyles, to serve as the commander of your army and complete all your objectives, so you can take over the battlefield with ease. Currently, the game is available only in demo mode, allowing you to get a glimpse of what is in store for the full playthrough.
Unfortunately, the title suffers from a wide range of issues that almost make it unplayable. For starters, the designs are inconsistent, with some units having disproportionately large arms and other exaggerated features. The mini-map is also cluttered, which can make navigation unnecessarily confusing. Most importantly, it is unable to maintain a stable frame rate in any setting, resulting in noticeable stuttering during gameplay.
Ambitious yet inconsistent
Despite its ambitious scale and expanded unit roster, Sudden Strike 5 struggles to deliver a polished battlefield experience. Technical instability, inconsistent unit designs, and a cluttered interface undermine its otherwise promising tactical depth. While the larger maps and 25-mission campaign sound impressive on paper, the current state makes it difficult to recommend. For now, you are better off revisiting previous games in the Sudden Strike series, like Sudden Strike 4.
Pros
- 300+ playable units
- 25-mission single campaign
- Largest scale tactical warfare to date
- Demo mode available
Cons
- Inconsistent designs
- Cluttered mini-map
- Unstable frame rate
