Control your wireless Sonos speaker
Sonos S1 Controller is a free audio management mobile app that allows you to easily control your listening experience. Developed by Sonos, Inc. for its audio devices, this mobile app is a multimedia remote controller that can wirelessly operate any supported Sonos products. It’s available on both PC and mobile and has cross-platform capabilities. It can also control more than one synced device. Take note that this is the legacy app that no longer gets major updates.
Does Sonos S1 still work?
Sonos is an American developer and manufacturer of audio products like small wireless speakers and heavy subwoofers. This brand is well known for its multi-room audio devices that you can scatter around a residence or building. However, with this setup, it uses an audio app that controls and operates the devices. This is where Sonos S1 Controller comes in. It can play and pause music, adjust volume levels, and save your favorite files.
Aside from these, you can set alarms, stream from popular services like Spotify and Amazon Music, search and browse audio content like podcasts, radio channels, and audiobooks. The app can also allow you to group room speakers and have them play in sync. However, take note that this version is the old Sonos Controller. Thus, it won’t receive any new features or services via updates. It will only get security patches, bug fixes, and music service support.
Sonos S2 is the new version that’s in active development. It has enhanced features and supports most of the brand’s modern device models. It has some limited backward compatibility, though, which is why Sonos S1 Controller is still available to download and use. This app is compatible with Zone Players, Play:5 (Gen 1), Bridge, Connect (Gen 1), and Connect:Amp (Gen 1) speakers. To continue operating these, you can’t upgrade your app to Sonos S2.
No more big updates
Overall, while Sonos S1 Controller no longer receives major updates, it’s still usable—especially if you still happen to own certain Sonos products that Sonos S2 can’t connect with. It works well enough with its base features, but don’t expect anything revolutionary since this is slowly getting phased out alongside its compatible devices. At the very least, its cross-platform function is still present and it can actually be run with the S2 app without any issues arising.
