Sequel to the gory strategy classic
Slayaway Camp 2 is a horror, strategy, and puzzle game. Players take control of the masked maniac Skullface, who is now trapped inside a fictional streaming service called Terrortube. This clever premise gives the puzzle game hundreds of potential new victims splattered across parody-laced movie worlds with dark comedic undertones.
Slayaway Camp 2 maintains its strategic puzzle roots, where players must maneuver Skullface across grid-based levels to corner and decapitate all the unsuspecting campers. It is a pathfinder puzzle game where the killer’s movement must be precise, often using environmental traps and obstacles to ensure a successful and gory kill.
Skullface is back
Slayaway Camp 2 expands on the original mechanics, introducing tons of new content across 25 parody-themed movies. Skullface can now interact with new items like pushable crates, rolling boulders, and pressure switches that trigger traps, adding layers of complexity to the grid logic. This content depth, coupled with optional hidden machete kills, offers a longer playtime and rewards puzzle solvers who are up to the challenge.
A huge improvement is the addition of four new killer classes, each with unique abilities beyond the standard slasher. For instance, the Sorcerers can destroy obstacles with projectiles, while the Ghost class can move through walls to surprise victims. These distinct killer types demand new strategic thinking for each scene, ensuring the brain-busting core mechanics stay fresh and challenging across all categories.
Despite its strengths, the sequel has some design choices that disappoint veterans. The shift to single-step movement on many levels, rather than the original’s slide-until-stopped mechanic, is criticized for trivializing some puzzles. Furthermore, the fun, gory death animations are unskippable, which greatly slows down the pace for impatient players. The minigames can also feel repetitive and cheap compared to the main puzzles.
A sequel with more to give than to lose
Ultimately, Slayaway Camp 2 is a successful continuation of the goretastic formula, offering excellent, challenging puzzles in a well-executed horror tribute theme. While the unskippable animations and the changes to the movement mechanic may frustrate some dedicated fans, the sheer amount of content, new killer abilities, and dark humor make this sequel worth a purchase for any puzzle or horror enthusiast looking for a satisfying challenge.
