SketchUp Make is a 3D modeling application that is an intuitive, easy-to-use interface for creating three-dimensional mockups of buildings and other objects. SketchUp allows you to draw virtual environments with detail or create practical projects such as renovating kitchen designs to be more user-friendly.

SketchUp Make is the free version of Sketchup Pro but is not as robust with features. It doesn't have advanced features for 3D modeling and rendering, which makes construction easier or more accurate. The most recent update was in 2017 as the team stopped developing the free version. If you're looking for an updated free 3D modeling app, also check out Autodesk 123D, Autodesk 3DS MAX, and AutoCad, which are used by professionals.

SketchUp Make’s features  

SketchUp Make features a clean and straightforward interface, enabling users to concentrate on their designs. You can easily drag and drop shapes from the toolbar into your workspace and refine them using precise tools, such as pencils and color options. Unlike many design software programs, the navigation and drawing tools are positioned on opposite sides of the toolbar, which is a unique aspect of SketchUp. 

The software boasts an extensive collection of 3D models that you can download and modify, ranging from fences to appliances. The online library includes comprehensive models of various building types that can be imported into SketchUp for customization. This versatility allows you to take on ambitious projects like mansions or skyscrapers, where many templates come with intricate interior details, not just exterior designs. 

The right-side toolbar includes panels for various functions, such as a simple help feature for unfamiliar objects. Additionally, the 3DWarehouse browser enables easy model searches within your library. Other tools, like color and texture swatches and rendering settings, enhance the design experience. The built-in 'instructor' feature offers context-sensitive assistance, providing animations and explanations in real time, helping users learn without interrupting their workflow. 

More features and their current status 

SketchUp provides impressive view controls that allow users to maneuver the camera around their models easily. In addition to custom camera movement, options for pre-defined views, such as front, side, rear, overhead, and angled perspectives, are available. Users can also animate transitions between 2-3 different views, creating smooth aerial visuals, which produce a drone-like effect while exploring structures in SketchUp Make. 

The free version offers a variety of practical features, though users might consider upgrading to the Pro version for more advanced capabilities. While this version allows importing SketchUp files and standard image formats like PNG and JPG, exporting in DWG and DXF formats requires a paid subscription. Certain 3D file types essential for various industries are also not included in the free version, necessitating other design programs like AutoCAD. 

 In November 2017, SketchUp retired its final free desktop edition for private, non-commercial use and introduced SketchUp Free, a web-based alternative. Both platforms offer free resources for design and 3D modeling, but differ in accessibility and features. SketchUp Make includes a broader selection of drawing and modeling tools for intricate projects and allows local file saving, while SketchUp Free supports basic tasks and stores files only on Trimble’s servers. 

Transition and alternative

SketchUp Make's user-friendly design helps users start on 3D modeling projects, from simple renovations to ambitious architectural designs. It's a valuable starting point for beginners or those working on less complex projects, with resources like the 3DWarehouse offering a bounty of customizable models. However, with its retirement in 2017, its successor SketchUp Free has moved toward a cloud-based approach while retaining some of the basic design tools.
