Forum software for self-hosted communities
Simple Machines Forum (SMF) by Simple Machines is a free, open-source forum application for building and managing online communities. Written in PHP, it supports common database backends, including MySQL, PostgreSQL, and SQLite. It includes discussion boards, user groups, moderation tools, multilingual support, templates, and a Package Manager for installing modifications. SMF is best suited to administrators and technically comfortable site owners who want control over their own forum environment.
SMF is used to run self-hosted discussion forums for public websites, private communities, and intranets. Administrators can organize boards into categories, manage member registration, control access by group, and support everyday forum activity such as posting, polls, private messages, attachments, and search. It can also integrate forum elements into an existing website through SSI or PHP, such as recent posts, login/logout areas, forum statistics, and news items.
SMF runs in standard PHP-based hosting environments and is commonly deployed on typical web server stacks. Its Package Manager can install or uninstall modifications, including mods for custom themes, from the administration center. SMF also supports XML and RSS export for selected forum data, making it easier to surface recent posts, news, or member updates outside the forum itself.
SMF provides detailed permission and user-management features. Administrators can create membergroups, assign multiple groups to a member, restrict board access by group, and configure permissions at the board level. For customization, SMF uses a template system and supports installable themes, allowing site owners to adjust the forum’s look and layout without rebuilding the application from scratch.
SMF is a strong fit for users who want a configurable forum they can host and manage themselves. It offers mature forum-management features, flexible access control, and extension options without requiring a complex application stack. The trade-off is that self-hosting gives administrators more control over data, configuration, and customization, but also makes them responsible for hosting, updates, security, backups, and scaling.
