A creepy gas station simulation game
Shift At Midnight is a premium simulation game that transforms the quiet of a midnight shift into a tense horror experience. You’ll work at a gas station and do ordinary tasks, but you can’t be too relaxed. Strange customers and unexpected situations are always waiting for you.
The heart of the gameplay of Shift At Midnight is determining whether someone is a normal human or a doppelganger. They’re pretty convincing, so you’ll need to keep a close eye on details and examine customers like a detective. Every night presents something new, which keeps your shifts from feeling too repetitive.
Monsters in plain sight
In Shift At Midnight, your main objective is simple: kill the doppelgangers before they come back for you. However, you need to be careful with your judgment because killing a human costs you money. The punishment can feel a little underwhelming, though, since getting your judgment wrong doesn’t always feel like a crucial mistake. Because of this, some players may feel that this part of the game could use a few adjustments.
Of course, identifying doppelgangers isn’t the only thing you’ll be doing. You’ll clean the store, stock shelves, take deliveries, take out the trash, pump gas, and handle other everyday gas station tasks while keeping an eye on suspicious customers. When monsters eventually come for you, you’ll also have weapons to defend yourself, while barricading doors and setting up traps can give you a better chance of surviving.
The game also has co-op, so you can enjoy the experience with friends. If you’re playing solo, though, don’t think it’s going to be boring. In fact, being alone can make the experience even creepier because you really feel the fear of having no one around to help you. Playing with others can sometimes break that horror vibe, especially when the gameplay itself isn’t feeling particularly freaky anymore.
Unconventional horror
Shift At Midnight is a solid choice for anyone who likes horror with a bit of mystery mixed in. The game doesn’t rely entirely on jump scares, and figuring out who is actually dangerous can be pretty fun. Some parts could definitely be improved, but they aren’t enough to ruin the experience. If you like creepy games with an unusual setup, this one is worth a try.
