SafeLocal is an application developed by The Johns Hopkins University that provides medical providers, such as anesthesiologists and surgeons, with a quick and easy way to calculate safe dosages of local anesthetic. This invaluable tool seamlessly incorporates patient weight, disease processes, mixtures of local anesthetic, and the presence or absence of additives to calculate the maximum safe dose, eliminating the need for manual calculations.

With SafeLocal, medical providers can effortlessly adjust the maximum safe dose based on patient weight, choose between anesthesia with or without epinephrine, and add comorbidities such as extremes of age, severe renal dysfunction, hepatic dysfunction, or advanced heart failure. The application also allows for the calculation of the remaining safe dose of anesthesia, enabling anesthesiologists or surgeons to administer the appropriate amount based on what has already been used.

SafeLocal is based on the calculations and recommendations outlined in Chapter 36 (Local Anesthesia) of Miller’s Anesthesia, 8th Edition, as well as the 2004 publication "Maximum Recommended Doses of Local Anesthetics: A Multifactorial Concept" by Rosenberg et al. It is important to note that the information provided by the application is based on expert opinion and should be used as a recommendation only. Clinical judgment by a physician is still required in every situation.
