Persistent terminals with an automation toolkit

RMUX by Helvesec is a Rust-based terminal multiplexer that keeps command-line sessions active after users disconnect or close their terminal client. It supports persistent sessions, multiple windows and panes, familiar tmux-style controls, and programmatic terminal management. Rust, Python, and TypeScript SDKs extend those capabilities to automated testing and AI-assisted workflows, while optional browser sharing provides remote operator and spectator access. It suits developers, administrators, and technical teams that need durable terminal workspaces.

Where human input meets scripted control

RMUX supports interactive shell work alongside automated terminal control. Its local daemon keeps sessions available across disconnects, allowing long-running commands, builds, servers, and debugging tasks to continue in the background. The typed automation SDKs can create sessions, send input, inspect terminal output, wait for visible text, and capture structured snapshots. This combination provides detailed control, although advanced scripting requires programming knowledge beyond ordinary terminal use.

Native foundations without a compatibility detour

On Windows, RMUX uses ConPTY to host terminal processes and Named Pipes for communication between its local components. This native design removes the need for a Unix compatibility layer while retaining tmux-style sessions, windows, panes, and key bindings. Prebuilt packages are available through several installation methods. However, the complete release layout needs to remain intact because the command, daemon, and supporting executables depend on one another.

Automation that reads the terminal room

The Rust, Python, and TypeScript SDKs expose typed controls for sessions, windows, and panes. Scripts can send text, monitor output, subscribe to events, and wait for specific terminal content before continuing. Structured snapshots also provide more dependable inspection than scraping unprocessed output alone. Ratatui integration lets Rust applications embed a live RMUX pane, although it does not automatically turn every terminal interface into a fully automated workflow.

Browser sharing opens a guarded side door

RMUX stores sessions, processes, and scrollback on the local host unless Web Share is activated. Browser sharing provides separate operator and read-only spectator links, pairing controls, and hybrid end-to-end encryption. Operator access still grants the ability to enter commands, so those links need the same protection as login credentials. Shared sessions also depend on the host machine and local daemon remaining active, even when the browser connection travels through a remote tunnel.

Familiar tmux habits, with a few loose threads

RMUX supports more than 90 tmux-style commands and carries over many familiar key bindings, pane controls, and session workflows. Basic multiplexing does not require SDK configuration or browser sharing, making ordinary use more approachable than its automation features suggest. However, advanced tmux configurations do not always transfer unchanged. Plugins, hooks, shell commands, conditionals, and dynamic settings can require adjustment, creating extra work for users with heavily customized environments.

A strong fit for programmable terminal work

RMUX combines persistent terminal sessions with unusually deep automation tools, making it a capable choice for developers who need more than simple pane management. Its tmux-style controls reduce the learning curve for experienced terminal users, while the SDKs support testing and agent-driven workflows. The main trade-offs appear at the advanced end: automation and remote sharing require technical setup, and complex tmux configurations can need manual changes before they behave as expected.

  • Pros

    • Persistent sessions with familiar tmux-style controls
    • Typed SDKs for detailed terminal automation
  • Cons

    • Advanced automation and sharing require technical setup
    • Complex tmux configurations can require adjustment
