A modern twist on a retro mystery game
Retro Mystery Club Vol.1: The Ise-Shima Case is a premium adventure game where players will have to solve a murder mystery and unravel the secrets behind the Ise-Shima region of Japan. This visual novel is heavily inspired by the classic game duology Famicom Detective Club.
Much like the aforementioned game, Retro Mystery Club Vol.1: The Ise-Shima Case invites players to explore a series of locations in order to search for clues and interrogate key characters who will help them solve the crime. Players will also have to make important decisions in order to lead to a conclusion quickly.
Solve the mystery of the Indigo Moon
Retro Mystery Club Vol.1: The Ise-Shima Case creates a nostalgic atmosphere that’s reminiscent of your classic adventure-mystery games. With its use of 8-bit pixel graphics, the game creates a unique yet captivating visual experience that exposes players to the iconic locations of Tokyo and Ise-Shima in a whole new way. As the detective tasked with solving the enigmatic case, you’ll also find yourself fully immersed in a gripping narrative.
The game’s episodic format, consisting of nine episodes and an epilogue, ensures that players are constantly engaged, uncovering the truth through investigative prowess. This also allows players to fully delve into the mysteries and lore of the region. Its gameplay structure switches between searching for clues and investigating key points, which constantly keeps players engaged without having to force them through endless panels of just plain dialogue.
It also follows a linear narrative structure, which is easy enough to comprehend as things unfold. However, while the game allows players to make a set amount of choices, you still end up with the same plot lines and ending. While this approach works well for maintaining a focused and cohesive storyline, it can feel unintuitive as anything you do will inevitably end up with the proper ending.
A commendable portrayal
Retro Mystery Club Vol.1: The Ise-Shima Case expertly blends suspenseful storytelling with charming 8-bit pixel art. The game’s investigation mechanics also serve as an honorable nod to some classic murder mystery games you’ve played in the past. While its narrative structure can feel unexciting to players who prefer plots that branch out into multiple possibilities, the game’s lore-filled plot and fruitful explorations allow players to remain constantly engaged.
