RegScanner is a free application for searching the Windows registry for specific registry keys. Once searched, the app displays the registry keys in a simple list, along with all of the information the user needs to find those registry keys in other applications, such as Small Registry Editor.

This application provides similar functionality to that of RegSeeker and Registry Workshop. However, it is more of a specific use-case application, focusing only on searching the registry rather than modifying or organizing it as those alternative apps allow.

A clear registry search function

The main aim of RegScanner is to provide a simple and easy-to-follow search function for the Windows registry. Windows OS does provide this functionality natively through its RegEdit application, but the search results can be hard to follow, particularly for less experienced users. RegScanner provides the results more clearly and in an easier-to-navigate format versus the native alternative.

List view and Unicode results

One of the main features of RegScanner is the ability to display the search results in a complete list, rather than forcing the user to jump from one search result to another, as in RegEdit. It can also search for Unicode strings that are located inside binary values.

A narrowly focused but effective app

The use-case for RegScanner is a very limited one, being solely for searching the Windows registry. With that said, it provides this functionality in a much more user-friendly way than the native alternative and can be combined with other applications to gain a more fully-featured registry management solution. It can also be used solely as an advanced search function in conjunction with Windows’ native solution.
