Reface is a free multimedia mobile application from Neocoretext Inc. It's a photo editing tool that lets users swap faces in photos and generate new ones based on specific parameters. It boasts tools to change hair color, smooth out their skin, or enhance facial features.

Similar in concept to apps like Remaker or DeepSwap, Reface makes face-swapping easy, and you can achieve artistic results with it in just a few taps. It can also be used to create short GIF-like videos with AI to achieve the same enhanced and artistic results with minimal effort as with photos.

What is Reface?

Reface works just like other face-swapper programs: you need to record your appearance with a selfie. As such, when you first launch the app, it will ask for your permission to use the camera—reassuring that your face data will only be used for its services. You can immediately take a generic selfie using the oval face marker on the screen and start using that as your face template. 

The main page of the app has GIF and short video clip content that you can use. These can range from celebrities of the music and film industry to meme GIFs that came from viral videos. However, these aren’t all free. You get a trial period of 3 days, but some GIFs will require you to either get the premium subscription or watch an ad. The app offers two subscription plans: monthly and annual. 

Aside from that, the face editor is too simple and doesn’t offer any advanced settings. You can only take a selfie or photo that the app will seamlessly edit onto the videos—you can’t record yourself and others and have the facial expressions match the flow of the video, unlike other apps. This means that the expressions on the final product will sometimes distort and be unfamiliar. You also can’t customize the scope of the editor.

Other notable features include the ability to create AI avatars using any photo or create professional-looking headshots for various purposes, like job applications. Then, there are the more quirky features, like performing gender swaps and a future baby generator that simulates what your children would look like based on your facial features.

Is Reface a safe app?

Reface holds social responsibility for your data protection. It gives a guarantee that none of your personal data is used for any other purposes aside from face-swapping. Moreover, it doesn't share any of your data with third-party applications. It provides a strict approach when it comes to user privacy, as it is included in their policy that they only collect photos that were taken in your camera while the app is in use. 

In order to offer the core service of the app, it gathers the facial feature data from photos. They assure users that none of this data will be used for any kind of malicious intent. Reface will only retain the photos for 24 hours after editing, and they will eventually be deleted. The facial feature obtained, on the other hand, is stored on its server for a limited period of 30 calendar days after your last use.

Not really that great

Overall, Reface: Face Swap app looks promising, but it needs a lot of work on its features, especially once the user purchases the premium plan. Sometimes, watermarks don’t get removed, and your photos may not turn out great once edited onto the GIFs. Considering the need to pay for these services and have them not even work properly, this app isn’t really a good deal, and you’re better off trying other face-swappers.
