Ratatan is a premium adventure game that combines the elements of rhythm and side-scroller action. You must join a great goddess on a mission: to bring fun and merriment to a deserted planet by using catchy songs and energetic dance moves. It’s a multiplayer game where you can create a team of four players and engage in detrimental brawls against various enemies.

Compete with players in this fun multiplayer game

The story begins with a goddess who decided to give her people the gift of music. As it echoed on the wind throughout the entire planet, everyone was enchanted to join her in the Everafter. However, you must follow the beat of the music and give rhythm commands to your servants, the Cobun, to progress in the game. With the freedom to move your Cobun, you must use your Melodium to succeed.

The game has a multiplayer feature, allowing you to create a team composed of four players and combat with over 100 characters. For instance, you can meet Keroronpa, an agitator with a super-duper megaphone; Harigittan, who’s a protector with amazing riffs; and Dekadon, a perilous dragon with a foul attitude. You can also explore fever mode, which puts the entire party in a dance fest, moving to the beat of ever-changing music.

The game’s world is a visual treat, offering a variety of landscapes such as blue skies, azure seas, and gold deserts. Each location holds surprises and adventures, so be vigilant and always be on the lookout for random dances. However, users must know that the game requires continuous grinding to continue the main story. It doesn’t have a quick turnaround time, which could bore some players.

The spiritual successor

For those who don't know, Ratatan is considered by many gamers to be the spiritual successor of the cult classic game Patapon. Given that the latter's devs also worked on this release, the influences and striking similarities are apparent from the get-go. From the rhythm-based gameplay to its distinct character designs, it essentially became the sequel that fans were hoping for but never got at the time.

That said, Ratatan has plenty of new things it brings to the table aside from the updated sights and sounds. The gameplay offers much more depth and control, with multiple playable characters available, each with their unique attributes and specialties. 

Refinements and fixes in the demo update

Version 0.3.105 of the Ratatan demo focuses on polishing the player experience with key improvements across the interface, gameplay balance, and overall stability. The user interface has been improved—session disconnection notifications are now clearer and no longer blocked by visual effects. A “NEW” icon has also been added to the support desk to flag unread notifications. Additionally, multilingual support has been expanded in the options menu.

Several balance changes refine combat, including reduced HP and toned-down skill power for boss enemies Squidly Pete and Wagoon. The update also fixes various issues, such as the roar effect from Dekadon not disappearing during the tutorial, graphical glitches affecting the Goods Gate in certain World 2 stages, and a bug related to language switching. Players can expect a smoother, more reliable demo session overall.

A catchy gaming experience

With its catchy tunes and adorable characters, Ratatan offers a unique and enjoyable gaming experience. The gameplay mechanics, combining rhythm and action, keep players engaged and challenged throughout their journey. The diverse range of characters, each with its own skills, adds depth and strategic options to the gameplay. The only downside is that some players might find it boring since the game requires extensive screen time to progress in the main story.
