The Watson-Scott Test
A Terrifying Personality Test
Free surreal horror game
Presentable Liberty is a free first-person horror indie game that takes place in a small area. The map is so small that it is not much bigger than a medium-sized closet. The game is also very short that it only lasts an hour or two, and is somewhat characterless. However, it challenges players to think, not just about the top score, but about your perception of life, death, happiness, and sorrow.
Presentable Liberty calls the attention to the effect large monopolies have on everyone’s fulfillment. In the game, you wake up in a cell. No one seems to be around, and the only contact that you have with the outside world is a series of letters pushed under the door.
The letters come from various characters, including Salvador, Charlotte, Dr. Money, and Mr. smiley. Each letter gives you a backstory as to what has happened. They also keep you informed on the happenings outside the jail. More, these letters will also invoke various emotions that will somehow doubt your existence.
The conclusion of the game is that you will develop a bond with three of the characters, one of which will, unfortunately, die. These events will only add to your helplessness as you cannot do anything but wait for another letter to arrive.
Unlike other adventure games, Presentable Liberty only allows for certain digital functions to occur, thereby creating parameters players must act within. You will spend nearly the whole game confined within the prison cell. This creates a feeling that you are helplessly trapped with not even a slight ray of hope.
Additionally, the game does not include a mechanism for responding to the incoming letters. With this, the rate of information inflow is fixed. You will, however, be given a GameBoy-like console about ten minutes into the game. You can use this console to play in-games minigames to pass the time between letters. Note that the result of these games does not affect the main story.
You can also collect the items that the character sends you with their letters. Among the items are party poppers, a table, a spider, some posters, and a clock. But, these things are simply distractions and does not really do much but occupy your already limited map.
Presentable Liberty is a strange narrative experience with minimal gameplay elements. It is not very long, and it comes with very limited mechanics. The game is simply a time-waster with a disturbing and depressing story. However, if you are interested in seeing an unusual and compelling psychological horror game, you should definitely give it a try.
