Pokémon GO is a freemium game for catching Pokémon in an augmented version of the real world. Using your smartphone’s GPS system and the game’s pre-installed map, you can walk around the streets and catch Pokémon as they spring up. There are Pokestops where you may collect free items, and you may stop at Pokémon gyms to battle with other players. 

Like the mainline games, the overarching goal of Pokémon GO is to catch Pokémon. There is no time limit, and the worst thing that can happen is that the Pokémon escapes the fate of living in your Poke Ball.

Get ready to embark on a Pokémon journey

Despite the number of adults who play the game, it is still a game for kids and was created to help children notice the world around them. However, the graphics are not perfect or impressive. The creatures are still broadly drawn, and even the human characters are still bland and only marginally more detailed than the characters in the animated series. At first glance, you will be unimpressed with the graphics, especially if you have a modern PC or game console. 

While it has a dedicated setting for unlocking your device’s native refresh rate, the app doesn’t feature options for improving or reducing the graphics quality. However, once you start playing the game, the less-than-impressive graphics will not bother you. Seeing the Pokémon in the real world is rather exciting, and is unlike anything that has come before it. When playing the game, it uses a significant amount of data and battery power, so make sure you have a suitable data plan before you move outside of your home Wi-Fi range. Not to mention, the app collects a lot of your data. 

As a heads up, some adults are using the app to prey on young children because it has them congregate in certain areas to collect Pokémon GO creatures. Hence, it’s best to supervise your kids while they’re playing the game. Also, players should exercise vigilance at all times to prevent any untoward accidents. Moreover, do not venture into dangerous neighborhoods in search of creatures, and most importantly, do not play it while driving. 

Immersive and interactive game

The unique aspect of Pokémon GO that provides immense gratification for players is the fact that it gives them first-hand experience of becoming a Pokémon master. The excitement does not conclude with the catching of Pokémon from various locations. It also includes the satisfaction of training and nurturing them to ensure their optimal growth, soon leading to their eventual evolution. The game carries on to its climax as players interact with other Pokémon trainers for thrilling gym battles and raids.

In gym battles, you must defeat the Pokémon at the gym to gain control of the area and replace it with one of your own Pokémon. On the other hand, raids are collaborative activities where a team of 20 players can challenge a formidable Pokémon. After vanquishing the raid boss, all team members will have the chance to capture and add it to their arsenals. Raids are a great way to catch rare and powerful Pokémon that are often unavailable through other means.

Pokemon GO’s Lunar New Year and Deep Depths event

Pokémon GO's 2025 Lunar New Year event, celebrating the Year of the Snake, runs from January 29th to February 2nd, 2025. Increased Lucky Pokémon trades and Lucky Friend chances are active. Ekans, Onix, and others appear more often, with boosted Shiny Ekans odds. 2km Eggs hatch Makuhita and more, with higher Shiny Nosepass chances. Field, Timed, and paid research offer Stardust, Zygarde Cells, and Lucky Eggs.

The Deep Depths event, March 19th-24th, features Nickit's Pokémon GO debut and Shiny Clauncher's increased presence. Egg hatch distances are halved, and 7km Eggs hatch Galarian Corsola, Pawniard, and Nickit. Field Research rewards event Pokémon encounters. Free Timed Research offers Kubfu Candy, Mysterious Components, and double Stardust for catching, with tasks expiring on March 24th, 2025.

The Might and Mastery and Love Cup update

GO Battle League: Might and Mastery starts March 4th, resetting ranks and offering familiar rank-up requirements. Leagues rotate weekly, featuring Great League and various themed cups like Willpower and Scroll. GO Battle Week (May 21st-27th) boosts Stardust and battle sets, with free Timed Research and wider Pokémon stat variances. Rank-up encounters include Mienfoo and Dreepy, while standard rewards feature Cubone and Morpeko. 

The 2025 Pokémon GO Love Cup from February 4th-18th 2025, features a 1500 CP cap, emphasizing pink and red Pokémon. Popular picks like Lickilicky may return, but Slowbro's rise could alter the meta. Potential bans for Skeledirge and Bruxish add uncertainty. Trainers must adapt to meta shifts, strategizing with themed Pokémon for GO Battle League wins.

Expand your in-game network 

Adding friends through friend codes is one of the game’s best features, allowing trainers to team up with each other and do Pokémon raids and spotlight hours together. These codes are 12-digit combinations that are unique to each user. However, it’s not a readily available feature for newbies. To use yours, your account must be at level 10 first. Navigating to the Friends tab, clicking the “Add Friend” button, and entering your buddy’s code should easily do the trick.

Grow your Pokémon collection

One could complain about the app’s safety hazards, or how the Niantic company is able to gain access to a great deal of your personal information, but one has to admit that collecting the Pokémon GO characters is satisfying. It is like collecting bottle tops in the 70s, stamps in the 80s, Pogs in the 90s, and Pokémon cards in the 00s. With this game, you have all the reasons to venture outdoors.
