In the Taça Guanabara, the 12 clubs compete in a single round-robin format. The top four teams advance, with the first-placed team crowned as the tournament champion and the last-placed team being relegated to the Série A2. In case of a tie in points, the tie-breakers are as follows:

1) Most victories;

2) Better goal difference;

3) More goals scored;

4) Head-to-head record (between two clubs);

5) Fewer red and yellow cards;

6) Random draw.

The semifinals and final are played in a knockout format with home and away matches, similar to the Taça Rio, a consolation tournament for the 5th to 8th placed teams in the first phase. In the semifinals, if teams are tied on points and goal difference, the team with the higher points in the Taça Guanabara advances. In the final, if teams are tied on points and goal difference, the winner is determined by a penalty shootout.
