A thief who operates on the high seas is known as a pirate. Even though ships were the primary target for most pirates, some of them also attacked coastal towns.

People have a tendency to think of pirates as being daring and swashbuckling, or as being evil and brutish, but in reality, the majority of pirates were just regular people who were forced to engage in criminal activity in order to make ends meet.
