Panty & Stocking - Friday Night Funkin' Mod is a free video game utility that lets you play as the Anarchy Sisters in the hit indie rhythm game, Friday Night Funkin'. Developed by Caravan of Noobs, this mod replaces the main characters with Panty and Stocking from the anime show, Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt. 

Unlike the Mid-Fight Masses and Hatsune Miku mods, this one doesn’t add a new opponent or week to the base game. Instead, it replaces the main characters—letting you play as TV show characters instead and play their show’s soundtrack. However, this mod is still a work in progress.

Friday Night Funkin' is a free-to-play open-source music video game released in 2020. Here, you play as the aptly-named Boyfriend, who’s trying to get a date from his Girlfriend by battling tough enemies through rap battles and sing-offs. The gameplay mostly consists of following your opponents’ arrow inputs and hitting them at the right moments. The success of this game has inspired creation of numerous mods for it. 

One of these is the Panty & Stocking mod, directly inspired by the 2010 Japanese anime television series, Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt. In it, you follow the exploits of the Anarchy Sisters, Panty and Stocking, who are angels kicked out of Heaven and must now do battle to earn their way back up there. Inserting these characters into FNF doesn’t change the game’s story, though.

This is because while Panty replaces Boyfriend and Stocking replaces Girlfriend, the three new songs added only feature the two of them—and they’re not even always featured in the game. There’s no character from the show who replaces your enemies; the screen is even zoomed to just the two of them at times. Additionally, they have unique animations but some of Stocking’s are missing for Weeks 1 and 3. 

In need of further development

All in all, Panty & Stocking - Friday Night Funkin' Mod looks promising but it still requires a lot of improvement for it to compete with the likes of other similar mods for this rhythm game. The two characters only replace the original character sprites during gameplay and not during the menu screen. Not all songs have been replaced with their show’s soundtrack. Plus, there’s no one to replace the enemies.
