Cross-platform messaging and video calling app
ooVoo is a free instant messaging application developed by ooVoo. This cross-platform communication tool enables users to send messages to anyone all over the world. It also features video calling capabilities that allow multiple participants to join in on a single call.
Just like with messaging services such as Viber or Telegram, ooVoo facilities easy and convenient communications among users from anywhere in the world. Aside from its video and messaging functions, it also has a healthy and active community of users that encourages interactions and meeting new people.
Is it any good?
ooVoo is an instant messaging service that launched back in 2007, but has flown under the radar relatively unnoticed. Since then, it has seen some major updates to its usability and performance. It works like other communication apps like Skype or Google Hangouts in that it lets users send messages or do video calls with others for free. You can even share pictures or short video clips with your contacts.
What makes ooVoo a little different from other services is that it is built around a large community of users from all parts of the globe. This social aspect of it encourages you to interact, meet, and make friends with other people. You can make posts for all to see, like, or comment on. You can even collaborate with someone to create content that can possibly trend.
If you want to do group interactions, you can do so via video calls that as of this writing supports up to 12 participants regardless of what platform they're on or device they use. The user experience still needs more work, though, as it feels rather inconsistent across its web, desktop, and mobile clients. Navigation is confusing for some, while performance is slow for others.
A decent social communications service
In summary, ooVoo is a decent option to consider if you're looking for a new messaging app to try out. It offers much of the same features as other popular services. It even has a community that encourages you to interact and meet new people. While the user experience needs work, it is still worth a look.
