Once Upon a Puppet is a 2.5D puzzler with platforming challenges that unfold in a world theater. Developed by Flatter Than Earth, this unique indie game is set in a whimsical yet dark theatrical world, the game follows Nieve, an exiled Stagehand, and Drev, a Puppet bound to her by magical threads, as they navigate the mysterious Understage to return to the Frontstage above. 

Once Upon a Puppet offers a captivating blend of storytelling and innovative gameplay mechanics as players control puppeteer and a puppet in order to approach action, movement, and solve puzzles. It also contains elements of fantasy, circus imagery, baroque architecture, and casual gameplay mechanics. Additionally, it requires a decently powered system in order to play this title.

Unique themes and clever gameplay 

Once Upon a Puppet center around dual-character control, with players manipulating Drev's movements while using Nieve's abilities to interact with the environment. The game introduces thread-based mechanics, allowing for creative puzzle-solving and platforming challenges. As players progress, they unlock new abilities, such as a grappling hook and a bow, enhancing the gameplay variety. However, the game is linear which limits exploration and player freedom. 

The narrative unfolds in a richly crafted theater-inspired universe, where players control both Nieve and Drev. The duo's journey is filled with themes of friendship, self-discovery, and redemption, as they uncover the secrets of the puppet kingdom and confront the enigmatic Shadow King. The players are also treated to well-voiced stories which enhances the immersion, captivating the in-game audience as well as the players’ hearts. 

Visually, this puzzle-platformer boasts a stylized aesthetic reminiscent of a theatrical production, with detailed backdrops and character designs. The game's atmospheric soundtrack complements the visuals, enhancing the immersive experience. Added to that is the exceptional music that fits the overall theme of the story, creating an experience to behold. While the overall game is decent, the story can feel predictable.

Once Upon a Puppet crafts a visually striking and mechanically inventive platforming adventure that stands out through its theater-themed world and heartfelt narrative. The dual-character gameplay and thread-based puzzles add depth to its design, while its emotional story and strong presentation keep players engaged. Despite its linearity and somewhat predictable plot, it delivers a memorable and artistically rich experience.
