A grim 8-bit quest worth revisiting
Odallus: The Dark Call, developed by JoyMasher, is a retro action platformer that follows Haggis, a battle-worn warrior searching for his kidnapped son. Eight separate but revisitable stages combine sword combat, branching paths, hidden upgrades, and large boss encounters. Its NES-inspired pixel art, chiptune soundtrack, completion-based ending, and Veteran Mode suit players who enjoy dark fantasy exploration and deliberate old-school challenge.
Eight stages hiding more than exits
Haggis travels through eight exploration-heavy levels selected from a world map rather than one seamless environment. Each stage contains concealed rooms, alternate routes, permanent upgrades, and barriers that become passable after gaining new abilities. This stage-based Metroidvania structure rewards careful searching and return visits, although repeated backtracking can test players who prefer constant forward momentum.
Old-school challenge without smashing the controller
Combat centers on short-range sword strikes, limited secondary weapons, precise jumps, and learning enemy patterns. More than 50 enemy types and large bosses keep encounters varied, while later sections demand stronger timing and patience. Movement remains intentionally deliberate, and the sword’s limited reach can feel rigid beside modern platformers. Veteran Mode adds a tougher replay option after players understand the campaign’s hazards.
Pixel darkness with sharp edges
The presentation uses restricted colors, chunky sprites, and chiptune music to build a bleak 8-bit dark fantasy atmosphere. Ruined temples, forests, mines, and grotesque creatures give each stage a distinct identity despite the limited visual style. Precise controls support careful platforming, although the restrained animation and retro movement lack the fluidity expected from newer action games. The aesthetic works best for players comfortable with deliberate technical limitations.
A focused adventure for patient treasure hunters
Odallus offers a compact campaign built around exploration, boss battles, and meaningful secrets rather than an enormous connected world. Discovering upgrades and completing hidden objectives can unlock a fuller ending, while Veteran Mode extends the challenge beyond the first run. Its strong atmosphere and rewarding stage design stand out, although repeated traversal and demanding later encounters narrow its appeal. Retro-action fans can find plenty beneath its grim, pixelated surface.
Pros
- Secret-filled stages reward exploration with permanent upgrades
- Dark 8-bit visuals and large bosses create a strong atmosphere
